Approachability concept
Awareness SCC 2025

This year we are having different ways in which we can be approachable together for the things that concern us. Here you will find an overview of who you can contact how and when during the camp.

Awareness opposes all forms of discrimination, violence, and boundary violations. Hurtful and inappropriate behavior, such as sexist, racist, antiSemitic, queerphobic, ableist, classist, or similar attacks, will not be tolerated at System Change Camp.

Bottle cap supporters/ approachable people

Awareness work should be done collectively by all of us and not exclusively done by people who take on awareness tent shifts. To achieve this, we would like to introduce a new system this year:
If you can just imagine being approached, you can make yourself a bracelet/necklace with a bottle cap. Of course, you can also take it off again if you don’t want to be approached. We will have an information table in front of the awareness tent where you can make your own bracelet/necklace.
So if you are not feeling well at the SCC and just want to talk to someone, you can approach people around you who are wearing such bracelets or necklaces so that you can talk to them directly.
Keep in mind that this is simply about us all looking after each other, but that these people have not received a detailed awareness onboarding.

Check-In groups

In order to collectivize awareness work more, we will continue the Check-In groups from last year. In the Check-In groups, we want to check in with each other and see what the individual people need at the moment and how the people in the group can be supported. In the event of conflicts, boundary violations or criticism of someone’s behavior, the people in the Check-In group should take responsibility for this and offer the necessary support in the event of assaults and boundary violations. Responsibility should also be taken if people within the Check-In group have noticed or brought to the attention of the Check-In group behavior that violates boundaries or assaults. To this end, the check-in groups should address each other and make contact with each other.
In addition, the Check-In groups should be a place to collectively deal with awareness and discrimination, privileges and positioning. Inputs are given that should be dealt with.
If a situation goes beyond the capacity of the Check-In group, there are then awareness or emotional first aid people who can still be approached and help if necessary.
However, the check-in group or a reference group can also be involved in the awareness process and be present, support or take responsibility before, during or after an awareness meeting.
Further details on the Check-In groups can be found in the corresponding Check-In group concept.

Emotional First Aid in the awareness tent

You will find us in the awareness tent. We offer this as a place of retreat where we respond to the wishes of those affected.
At the beginning of the conversation, we clarify whether we are the right people to provide support. If not, we can offer alternatives from the team and, if necessary, bring in or call a person from your affinity group or friend.
We try to do justice to the person’s need to communicate (if present) and listen with a supportive, non-questioning attitude. It is also possible that just being present can make a big difference.
We show understanding for the emotions present. However, we do not actively encourage, judge or evaluate. We focus on wishes and needs and adopt the terminology of the person concerned.
We focus on the wishes and needs of the person concerned and do not correct them in their choice of words, even if we would not choose them ourselves. We are not obliged to tolerate discriminatory language. If this causes further distress, the awareness person can seek help. Ambiguities (e.g. that a person is both affected and discriminating themselves) do not have to be endured or resolved alone.
